The planned transformation of the energy system in the EU and Germany offers strategic potential for the underground storage of alternative energy carriers at the Rüstringen site: existing crude oil caverns and available salt rights could be utilized in the future to develop storage infrastructure for alternative energy carriers.

Initial technical, economic, and permitting-related preparatory work has already been initiated.

Timetable

Since Q2/2022

Planning for the successive transformation of the site for hydrogen storage (on-going)

Since Q1/2024

Preparation of authority approval (“Rahmenbetriebsplanverfahren”) with public consultation

Since Q4/2024

Technical works to convert the first oil caverns for hydrogen storage

From Q2/2030

Start of works for construction of the first newly built caverns

From Q4/2034

Successive conversion of further oil caverns for hydrogen storage

Authority Approval

Authority approval (“Rahmenbetriebsplanverfahren”) with public consultation is not yet finished. The submission of the application documents is planned for Q3/20227.
